The RSPCA are warning people of the danger of gifting pets this Christmas.
Last Christmas the RSPCA received more than 3,300 calls about needy animals in the South West.
The festive appeal, Stock the Sleigh, has been launched to help thousands of abused, neglected and abandoned animals.
Shockingly, last Christmas Day was the busiest for the charity in five years with 934 calls.
Claire Sparkes, general manager at Gables Dogs and Cats Home in Plympton said: "We see more adolescent animals coming in after Christmas, once they've grown out of their cute puppy or kitten phase.
"People start to give up on them because they don't have time to do any training with that animal."
There were more than 5,000 animals taken in by the RSPCA over the Christmas period last year, including more than 2,100 cats and more than 1,000 dogs.
